Kitesurfing in Aruba: Best Spots and Tips

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Aruba is world-renowned as ‘One Happy Island,’ where sun, sea, and pristine beaches draw visitors from across the globe. But did you know that the island is also a premier destination for kitesurfing?

The constant trade winds, combined with calm seas and year-round warm temperatures, create the perfect conditions for an unforgettable kite session. The sport is so popular on the island that Aruba hosts an annual kitesurfing event: the Aruba Hi-Winds festival, attracting enthusiasts from around the world.

What is Kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing, also known as kiting, is an exhilarating water sport where the rider stands on a small surfboard and is pulled by a kite. Unlike windsurfing, which uses a sail, kitesurfing harnesses the power of a kite to create a lifting effect, enabling riders to perform high and far jumps. Speeds are impressive too — Frenchman Alex Caizergues set the speed record at over 107 kilometers per hour in 2017, while the average kitesurfer can comfortably reach speeds around 80 kilometers per hour.

Why Aruba is Perfect for Kitesurfing

Aruba is blessed with ideal conditions for kitesurfing. The island is surrounded by the clear blue, warm Caribbean Sea, with average daytime temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius year-round and water temperatures holding steady at approximately 27 degrees. What truly sets Aruba apart is the constant northeast trade wind, delivering consistent wind speeds of around 25 kilometers per hour (force 4 on the Beaufort scale).

Best Spots for Kitesurfing in Aruba

The most popular kiting location in Aruba is Hadicurari Beach (also known as Fisherman’s Huts or The Huts), located in the north of the island at the end of Palm Beach, past the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort. This is considered the mecca for kiters, where enthusiasts gather to ride and learn.

Eagle Beach, located south of Palm Beach, offers favorable conditions for beginning kiters. For more experienced adventurers, the east side of the island features rugged coastline and higher waves at spots such as Boca Grandi, Bachelor’s Beach, Andicuri Beach, and Dos Playa.
