Lizette Winterdal has presented her Papiamento children’s book Mayra su regalo at Aruba’s library and donated five copies for young readers.

The author presented the book during the week and gave the library five copies so children can discover the story. Roman Gibbs created the illustrations.
The story is set during the December holiday season and follows a child whose celebration appears likely to lack its usual brightness and magic. An unexpected encounter changes the course of the holiday.
Author draws on a longstanding interest in writing
Winterdal was born in Aruba and grew up in San Nicolas. English and Papiamento are her first languages, and she writes stories, poems and rhymes alongside her other work and studies.
She is studying for a bachelor’s degree in Dutch as a foreign language after previously pursuing teacher training. The source report described reading and storytelling as central interests in her life.
Book supports Papiamento reading for children
The presentation gives young library users access to a locally written story in Papiamento. It also adds to Winterdal’s participation in children’s literary activities, including the island’s children’s book festival.
The donated copies are intended for the library’s young readers and connect a local author and illustrator with children through a seasonal story.
