ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Iberostar Leads Organic Waste Recycling Initiative in Aruba by working alongside local partners to develop sustainable solutions for managing organic waste and advancing a circular economy across the island’s hospitality sector.
The initiative reflects a shared commitment to reducing waste, protecting Aruba’s environment, and promoting long-term sustainability through collaboration between hotels and environmental organizations.
Since November 2024, Iberostar has been working under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with key members of the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHATA) Environmental Committee. The agreement established a collaborative framework to improve organic waste management practices and expand sustainability initiatives throughout Aruba’s hospitality industry.
The partnership aims to reduce the environmental impact of waste by diverting organic materials away from landfills, increasing recycling efforts, and supporting circular economy initiatives that generate long-term environmental and community benefits.
Turning Organic Waste into Valuable Resources
To strengthen sustainable waste management, Iberostar Aruba has partnered with local organizations to improve the separation and processing of organic materials.
With technical support from SinBa (Sin Basura Perú), the project explores practical solutions such as compost production and the use of suitable organic waste for animal feed, helping transform materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.
The collaboration brings together hotels, environmental specialists, and local institutions to demonstrate how joint efforts can create practical and environmentally responsible waste management systems.
Supporting Aruba’s Environment
The compost produced through the initiative is intended for use in:
- Landscaping projects
- Agriculture
- Community gardens
- Ecological restoration projects
- Other environmental conservation initiatives
Keeping organic materials within Aruba’s local circular economy also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill disposal.
Learning from Regional Success
To further strengthen the program, representatives from participating hotels visited Iberostar Selection Bávaro Suites in the Dominican Republic.
The study visit allowed participants to observe an established organic waste management operation, exchange knowledge with experienced sustainability teams, and gain practical insights into implementing successful waste diversion systems within hotel operations.
According to the organizers, the visit reinforced the importance of collaboration while demonstrating how proven sustainability practices can be adapted to Aruba’s unique circumstances.

Through this partnership, Iberostar and its local collaborators say they are proving that sustainability is most effective when organizations work together toward common goals.
By transforming organic waste into useful resources instead of sending it to landfill, participating organizations are helping build a more resilient and circular economy while positioning Aruba’s hospitality industry as a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.
