JUST ART research will bring Aruba’s local knowledge, cultural heritage and community perspectives into a six-year study of artistic approaches to climate justice, according to a University of Aruba announcement reported by DIARIO on October 23.
Kingdom-wide project began in January
The project launched in January 2026; the report is not an announcement of an October launch. It is funded by the Dutch Research Council, NWO, and led by Professor Ann-Sophie Lehman at the University of Groningen.
The initiative connects artists, researchers, activists and communities in Aruba, Curaçao, St Maarten, the BES islands and the European Netherlands. It explores how artistic practices can support fair treatment and meaningful participation for people affected by climate change.
Aruba contribution centres on community knowledge
The university says Aruba’s contribution will focus on local knowledge, cultural heritage and community-led climate resilience. Salys Sultan of the University of Aruba emphasized the human dimensions of climate change and the role of art in helping people engage with change.
Planned activities include artist residencies, public workshops, community dialogue and collaborative research with local partners. The report says a University of Aruba PhD researcher and community members will help facilitate that work, but does not provide dates for individual activities.
