Willem III Tower Restoration Progresses at Fort Zoutman

ORANJESTAD, Aruba – Willem III Tower Restoration work at Fort Zoutman is progressing according to plan, with officials reporting satisfactory advances and an earlier-than-expected completion window for one of Aruba’s most recognizable historic monuments.

Raul Gei of Monumentenbureau confirmed that the different phases of the restoration are moving forward in accordance with the established schedule. He said the team continues to carefully monitor the work to ensure that each stage meets the technical and historical standards required for a monument of such significance.

According to Gei, the project is proceeding well and the restoration remains on the correct path. The work is being carried out with particular attention to preserving the historic character of the Willem III Tower while addressing structural and maintenance needs that have developed over time.

During the restoration process, specialists identified an additional component that requires attention. An exterior ring structure on the tower was found to be in a more deteriorated condition than originally anticipated following a detailed inspection.

Monumentenbureau is now in the process of requesting quotations for the restoration or replacement of this component. Once arrangements are finalized, the additional work will be incorporated into the wider restoration project.

Despite the unexpected deterioration, Gei said the extra work is not expected to significantly affect the overall project schedule.

The main Willem III Tower Restoration is currently expected to be completed sometime between the end of October and the end of November 2026. This represents an improvement over the original timeline, which had projected completion toward the end of the year or possibly in early 2027.

The restoration of the Willem III Tower forms part of the Government of Aruba’s broader vision to preserve and strengthen the island’s historical and cultural heritage. Fort Zoutman and its tower are among Aruba’s most iconic historic landmarks and represent an important part of the island’s architectural and national history.

Government officials say protecting such monuments is not only about maintaining old buildings. Historic structures also help preserve Aruba’s cultural identity and give future generations an opportunity to understand and appreciate the island’s development over time.

Prime Minister Mike Eman has identified the preservation of historical and cultural heritage as one of his administration’s priorities. During the current period, the government has promoted several initiatives aimed at protecting and restoring important national monuments.

These efforts include work involving historic buildings in San Nicolas, such as Kapel Emanuel and the church on Bernhardstraat, as well as traditional homes in Alto Vista and planned heritage recognition in Brasil.

The government is also introducing protected monument seals designed to officially identify buildings and locations with unique historical and cultural significance to Aruba.

Officials say these initiatives demonstrate an ongoing commitment to preserving sites that tell the story of the Aruban people.

Through collaboration with property owners, foundations, heritage specialists and other partners, the government aims to continue investing in historic structures throughout the island.

The goal is to ensure that important buildings are properly maintained, recognized and preserved instead of being lost through deterioration or neglect.

The progress of the Willem III Tower Restoration is therefore being viewed as part of a larger national effort to protect Aruba’s architectural heritage while strengthening cultural identity.

Once completed, the restored tower is expected to continue serving as an important historical landmark for residents and visitors while preserving a significant piece of Aruba’s history for future generations.
