Aruba Youth Violence Sparks Urgent Call for National Action

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Concerns about Aruba Youth Violence have intensified after Member of Parliament Evelyn Wever-Croes called for urgent national action to protect young people, support vulnerable families and prevent deadly violence from becoming normalised.

Speaking during a recent MEP parliamentary faction press conference, Wever-Croes extended her condolences to the families of young people who have lost their lives through gun violence in Aruba during 2026.

She said every young life lost in such circumstances causes profound pain throughout the community and raises serious questions about the direction in which Aruba is moving.

Parliamentarian Calls for National Reflection

Wever-Croes urged residents, community organisations and public authorities to reflect on what each can do to strengthen the foundations of Aruban society.

She said the country must examine why some young people are becoming exposed to serious danger and determine what practical measures are needed to protect them.

The parliamentarian also called for stronger support for families facing social, emotional or financial pressures.

According to Wever-Croes, protecting young people requires more than responding after a violent incident. Aruba must provide opportunities, guidance and stable support before young residents become exposed to dangerous situations.

Government Urged to Lead Public Debate

Wever-Croes appealed directly to Prime Minister Mike Eman to organise a serious national discussion about violence, family wellbeing and youth protection.

She referred to the energy and coordination demonstrated during the recent National Day to Care for Aruba and asked the government to apply the same enthusiasm and dedication to addressing the challenges confronting young people and families.

The proposed debate would examine what is happening within Aruba’s communities, what factors are placing young people at risk and which institutions must become involved in preventing further tragedies.

Wever-Croes said Aruba should not wait for another fatal incident before beginning that conversation.

Sixteen-Year-Old Killed in Santa Cruz

Her comments followed the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old in the parking area of the Nadi Croes–Crismo Angela Stadium in Santa Cruz during late July.

Police and emergency personnel responded shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. The teenager was found unresponsive with a gunshot injury and later died after being transported for emergency treatment.

Investigators have continued examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Multiple people had been detained by July 30, although authorities had not publicly confirmed the precise alleged role of each person involved.

Because the investigation remains active, unconfirmed claims concerning the motive or responsibility for the killing should not be presented as established facts.

Two Young Deaths Raise Community Concern

Local coverage has reported two separate killings involving teenagers or young people during a period of approximately six months.

Although two cases alone do not establish that Aruba is experiencing a general surge in homicide, the involvement of young victims has generated widespread concern about firearms, violent disputes and the wellbeing of vulnerable youth.

An earlier fatal shooting occurred in May in the Palm Beach area. Police investigations led to several arrests and the reported recovery of a firearm believed to have been connected to that case. The investigation was still ongoing when those developments were announced.

Stronger Families Considered Essential

Wever-Croes placed particular emphasis on strengthening families as part of any long-term response.

She said young people require protection, attention, opportunities and stable environments that help them make positive choices.

Supporting parents and caregivers may involve cooperation among schools, social workers, mental-health professionals, neighbourhood organisations, sports clubs, police and government agencies.

The parliamentarian argued that Aruba must examine the foundation of family life rather than treating youth violence solely as a police or criminal-justice issue.

Her statement did not present a detailed policy programme. Instead, it called for government leadership and a broader national discussion capable of producing coordinated measures.

Violence Must Never Become Normal

Wever-Croes said Aruba must never accept or normalise the killing of people, especially young residents.

She described every youth death caused by violence as a deep wound within the country and again expressed support for families experiencing immeasurable grief.

The parliamentarian said she hopes Aruba can find an effective path toward restoring peace and security throughout its communities.

Her message focused on collective responsibility: the government must lead, institutions must cooperate, communities must remain involved and families must receive the support required to protect young people.

Call for Coordinated Prevention

The discussion surrounding Aruba Youth Violence now extends beyond the investigation of individual shootings.

It includes questions about firearm access, conflict prevention, family stability, education, recreational opportunities, mental-health support and early intervention for young people showing signs of vulnerability.

Wever-Croes called for those subjects to become part of a serious national debate rather than receiving attention only immediately after a tragedy.

She said the country must act together to protect its young people, strengthen families and prevent violence from becoming an accepted part of life in Aruba.
