ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba’s Department of Elderly Affairs (DOZ) is promoting the well-being of senior citizens through a gardening project developed in partnership with Santa Rosa and EPI Aruba.
According to DOZ Director Desiree Helder, the initiative combines recreational and educational activities, giving older adults the opportunity to plant and care for flowers and vegetables while spending meaningful time together.
Agricultural specialists from Santa Rosa provide guidance on planting techniques, while participants receive soil, seeds and plants. The project also uses specially designed raised planter boxes, allowing seniors, including wheelchair users, to take part comfortably.
Helder said the program encourages older adults to remain physically active, socially engaged and mentally stimulated. She added that the Department plans to expand the initiative to all elderly care homes and day centers across Aruba, ensuring more seniors can benefit from activities that promote independence, well-being and quality of life.
