Santa Rosa is encouraging residents to grow food in Aruba by beginning with small home projects and learning methods suited to the island.
Households can begin with compact gardens
Randy Maduro of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries said tomatoes, celery, peppers, lettuce and fruit can provide a practical starting point. Residents can grow in soil or use systems such as hydroponics and aquaponics, according to Diario.
The message was linked to World Food Day on October 16 and its emphasis on innovation for future food production.
Water access remains a major challenge
Maduro said access to water is one of the sector’s biggest obstacles. He referenced discussions with WEB about a special agricultural water-meter rate for eligible people over 60.
Santa Rosa also offers courses on cultivation and innovative methods. Maduro said strong interest among young people could help expand local agriculture and involve a new generation in food production.
