ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Prime Minister Mike Eman joined community members at the first National Emancipation Day commemoration held in San Nicolas, honoring the abolition of slavery and Aruba’s shared history.
The event was organized by the National Platform for Aruba’s Slavery Heritage (PENHSA) in collaboration with Stichting Rancho, We Culture, and the Slavery Past Commemoration Committee.
Observed on July 1, the national day brought together residents to honor the island’s ancestors and reflect on the history of slavery and the importance of freedom. The program began with a commemorative march through the streets of San Nicolas and concluded at Carnival Village.
The cultural celebration featured dance performances, poetry, tambu music, local food stands and dishes inspired by African traditions. Organizers said the event aimed to preserve historical awareness, honor those who suffered under slavery and promote respect, equality and unity within the community.
