An Oranjestad cleanup is continuing near the courthouse and other downtown locations where waste and public-order concerns have repeatedly affected businesses and public spaces.
Officials reviewed recurring trouble spots
Justice Minister Arthur Dowers visited locations receiving attention and heard concerns about accumulated waste, inappropriate use of public areas and conditions affecting the commercial environment. The government wants to prevent cleaned sites from again becoming dumping or makeshift gathering points, according to 24ora.
The initiative forms part of earlier work in Oranjestad and is intended to address affected locations one by one rather than rely on isolated cleanups.
Response includes social concerns
The government acknowledged that some people remaining in these areas may be living with addiction, mental-health challenges or other difficult circumstances.
Officials said the response therefore needs to combine maintenance, safety and public order with appropriate attention for vulnerable people. The stated aim is a cleaner and more orderly city centre for businesses, residents and visitors.
