Medical professionals from the Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) and Instituto Medico San Nicolas (ImSan), along with ambulance paramedics, recently completed a joint training focused on improving cooperation during acute care scenarios.
The training, organized by the HOH Academy, was designed to enhance communication between ambulance staff and emergency room teams. Instructors from the Dutch company ‘Strijven’ were brought in to lead the sessions, utilizing simulations to replicate real-life street situations and patient handovers.
Anna Posner, a Clinical Teacher at HOH Academy, highlighted the importance of effective communication under pressure. The simulations allowed paramedics and hospital staff to practice the SBAR method—a standardized communication tool used to convey critical patient information upon arrival at the hospital.
Liberato Hoek, Operations Manager of Ambulance Care at ImSan, noted that the exercise fostered mutual understanding and trust between the two entities. The feedback from participants was positive, with both sides identifying areas for improvement in their collaborative efforts.
The initiative aims to elevate the quality of care in Aruba by ensuring that medical teams work seamlessly together from the site of the emergency through to hospital admission.
