Current DIMAS work permit Aruba rules are resulting in first-time applications being denied when applicants do not qualify under the published exemption list or fail to meet required procedures.
DIMAS Director Kathy Paskel explained during an interview with DIARIO that first-time work permits are currently being denied unless the position falls within an officially approved exemption category.
According to Paskel, DIMAS continues to receive applications for positions that are not included on the exemption list.
Those applications are being rejected.
She said another common problem involves employers applying for workers who qualify under the exemption list but are already physically present in Aruba.
In some cases, the individual entered Aruba as a tourist and remained on the island while the work permit application was submitted.
Paskel stressed that these applications are also being denied.
If a company needs to recruit someone for a position included on the exemption list, the application should be submitted while the prospective employee remains outside Aruba.
Once the required authorization process has advanced, the person may enter Aruba with the appropriate invitation letter and complete required medical examinations on the island.
Paskel said some applicants appear to believe that being present in Aruba will not affect the application if their profession is listed as an exemption.
She emphasized that this assumption is incorrect.
“You must be abroad,” Paskel said, reiterating that physical presence outside Aruba is an important requirement in these cases.
Incomplete Documents Also Lead to Denials
Paskel also warned that incomplete applications are contributing to the number of rejected requests.
DIMAS may first give applicants an opportunity to provide missing documents.
However, if the requested information is not submitted within the required process, the application can ultimately be denied.
Employers and prospective workers are therefore advised to carefully review the applicable exemption list and documentation requirements before submitting an application.
