Local Farming and Beekeeping Support Aruba Future through initiatives that promote food security, environmental sustainability, and economic development in the communities of Rooi Afo and Seroe Preto.
During a recent Accion di Bario visit, Prime Minister Mike Eman toured local agricultural and beekeeping projects that demonstrate how local production and environmental conservation can work together to strengthen Aruba’s resilience.
One of the stops included Agro Tech, where agricultural technician David Rodriguez shared information about the company’s watermelon production. According to Rodriguez, the farm currently harvests watermelons every 60 days and plans to expand cultivation to increase the availability of locally grown produce throughout the year.
The visit highlighted how Local Farming and Beekeeping Support Aruba Future by reducing dependence on imported products while encouraging sustainable food production on the island.
The Prime Minister also met with Ruben Montilla of Aruba’s Bee Haven, who emphasized the importance of protecting Aruba’s bee population. Montilla explained that water and flowering plants are essential for honey production and that bees play a critical role in pollination and maintaining healthy ecosystems.
According to Montilla, Aruba’s bee population possesses unique characteristics and could play an important role in the future as global concerns about declining bee populations continue to grow. Honey and other bee-related products produced locally are already available in supermarkets and tourist shops across the island.
The Local Farming and Beekeeping Support Aruba Future initiative demonstrates how local entrepreneurs contribute directly to community development, environmental protection, and economic activity. These efforts also help prepare Aruba for potential future shortages of fruits and vegetables by strengthening domestic production.
Government officials noted that such projects align with broader goals related to reforestation, environmental conservation, and the expansion of green spaces throughout Aruba.
By encouraging agriculture, beekeeping, and sustainable practices, Local Farming and Beekeeping Support Aruba Future while creating jobs, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing the island’s long-term resilience and sustainability.
