ORANJESTAD (AAN) – World Nature Conservation Day Marks Aruba’s Environmental Progress as Prime Minister Mike Eman called on residents to continue protecting the island’s natural heritage during the observance of World Nature Conservation Day on July 28.

In a statement marking the international observance, the Prime Minister emphasized that nature is an inseparable part of Aruba’s identity. He noted that the island’s beaches, countryside, forests, ecological areas, coral reefs, and biodiversity have shaped Aruba for generations while providing clean air, water, economic opportunities, and a high quality of life.

Protecting Nature Is a Shared Responsibility

According to Prime Minister Eman, environmental conservation is more than an ecological obligation—it is a commitment to the common good.

He said the decisions made today will determine the Aruba that future generations inherit, adding that every tree planted, coastline restored, species protected, and resident who chooses to care for the island contributes to a healthier, stronger, and more resilient Aruba.

The Prime Minister stressed that protecting nature cannot rest solely with the government. Instead, he called for collaboration among citizens, businesses, schools, non-governmental organizations, scientists, and public institutions to safeguard the island’s natural resources.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Recognition

Eman highlighted one of Aruba’s major environmental achievements this year: the island’s designation as a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Reserve.

According to the statement, the international recognition opens new opportunities for:

  • Scientific research
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Sustainable management of Aruba’s natural resources

He also noted that Aruba’s Ministry of Tourism is advancing a regenerative tourism model aimed not only at reducing environmental impacts but also at actively restoring ecosystems so tourism leaves the island in a better condition for future generations.

Tribute to Environmental Organizations

The Prime Minister said these accomplishments belong to all Arubans and are the result of years of dedication by individuals and organizations committed to protecting the island’s environment.

He expressed appreciation to environmental organizations, volunteers, researchers, educators, community groups, and countless residents whose work has helped preserve Aruba’s natural heritage.

Among the organizations recognized were:

  • Accion Ambiental
  • AMISTAD (Aruba Management Institute for Sustainable Development)
  • Animal Rights Aruba
  • Aruba Animal Shelter
  • Aruba Birdlife Conservation
  • Aruba Circular Economy Foundation
  • Aruba Conservation Foundation
  • Aruba Marine Mammal Foundation
  • Aruba Reef Care
  • Climate Action Aruba
  • Zero Waste Aruba

Along with many other environmental and conservation organizations that continue supporting sustainable development across the island.

Three Ways Residents Can Help

Prime Minister Eman encouraged everyone to take an active role in protecting Aruba’s environment by:

  • Volunteering in community cleanups, tree-planting projects, habitat restoration initiatives, and other conservation activities.
  • Supporting conservation organizations through financial contributions, helping them continue their environmental work.
  • Learning and sharing knowledge about Aruba’s unique ecosystems while encouraging others to become active stewards of the island’s natural environment.

Looking Toward the Future

The Prime Minister concluded that Aruba’s future will be shaped not only by government policy but also by the daily choices, values, and commitment of its people.

He said that through shared responsibility, collaboration, and care for the common good, Aruba can continue building a greener, more resilient, and even more beautiful island for future generations.

The message closed with wishes for a meaningful World Nature Conservation Day and a renewed commitment to preserving Aruba’s unique natural heritage.
