ORANJESTAD, Aruba — The Dufi Kock Book Signing will give residents an opportunity to meet the Aruban writer and historian while learning about two new publications dedicated to preserving the island’s history.

The signing will take place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Centro di Bario Noord from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The activity will be held during Nos Mercado, the community centre’s weekly market featuring locally produced goods and products. Visitors will be able to meet Kock, discuss his research and obtain signed copies of his latest books.

Two Publications Explore Aruba’s Past

Kock’s new publications are titled Seccion Historico di Aruba and Mision di Marineronan Noruega.

The two works explore different parts of Aruba’s history, including the development of local communities, the influence of the Lago refinery and the international connections that helped shape the island’s cultural identity.

The books were published with exclusive support from MetaCorp and were previously presented to the National Library of Aruba.

Extensive Collection Includes 136 Historical Topics

Seccion Historico di Aruba is a 310-page publication covering 136 subjects connected to Aruba’s history.

The extensively illustrated book is based on more than 33 years of historical research, document collection and efforts to record information for future generations.

The publication examines the people, events and developments that contributed to the formation of Aruba’s identity.

Kock has said that preserving historical information can help younger generations better understand the island’s present and make more informed decisions about its future.

The book was dedicated to Aruba’s future generations and has been added to the National Library’s collection. Copies can be borrowed through its Oranjestad and San Nicolas branches.

Second Book Examines Norwegian Sailors’ Mission

The shorter, 27-page publication Mision di Marineronan Noruega explores the role of the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission in San Nicolas.

During the height of Lago refinery operations, thousands of Norwegian sailors arrived in Aruba aboard commercial and whaling vessels.

The mission, located on Vuylestekestraat, provided the visiting sailors with a place to relax, communicate with their families and find a temporary home while they were away from Norway.

The book documents a lesser-known chapter of San Nicolas history and the social and cultural influence international maritime activity had on the community surrounding the refinery.

Event Supports Historical Education

Centro di Bario Noord said hosting the signing reflects its commitment to education, culture and the preservation of Aruba’s identity.

The event may be particularly relevant to students, teachers, researchers and residents interested in local history.

Visitors will be able to speak directly with Kock about his research process, the historical documents he collected and the stories presented in the two publications.

The activity also allows residents to combine a cultural experience with support for local vendors participating in Nos Mercado.

Kock Dedicated Decades to Historical Research

Adolf “Dufi” Kock worked for 35 years at the Lago refinery and later spent five years in Aruba’s hotel industry.

After leaving professional employment, he dedicated his time to community service and historical research involving Aruba, Lago and the Second World War.

His work has focused on collecting and preserving historical records that might otherwise be lost and making that information available to the public.

The Dufi Kock Book Signing will take place at Centro di Bario Noord on Saturday, August 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is open to residents interested in meeting the author, purchasing signed copies and learning more about the people and events that helped shape Aruba.
