A Worker Purchasing Power Increase initiative announced by the Government of Aruba is expected to benefit 18,262 employees, with a special focus on workers with lower incomes who continue to feel the effects of rising living costs.
Prime Minister Mike Eman stated that economic growth should not only be reflected in national statistics but should also translate into tangible improvements in the daily lives of Aruba’s residents.
According to figures presented by the Department of Labor and Research (DAO), the Worker Purchasing Power Increase will primarily support employees earning minimum wage or lower incomes. This group represents 37.4 percent of all private-sector workers on the island.
The government plans to increase the reparatietoeslag, a financial support measure designed to strengthen the purchasing power of lower-income workers.
Data released by DAO shows that the beneficiaries include:
- 5,554 workers earning below the minimum wage.
- 4,389 workers earning the minimum wage.
- 8,319 workers earning between the minimum wage and AWG 2,500 per month.
In total, the Worker Purchasing Power Increase will benefit 8,187 men and 10,075 women employed across Aruba.
The largest concentration of eligible workers is found in sectors such as commercial services, hospitality, retail, lodging, and construction.
Prime Minister Eman emphasized that the support measure is not intended to replace ongoing discussions regarding a future increase in the minimum wage. Instead, it serves as immediate assistance while broader social dialogue continues between government, employers, and labor unions.
The government is exploring long-term solutions related to establishing a sustainable minimum income standard while ensuring workers receive support during the transition period.
The Worker Purchasing Power Increase forms part of a broader strategy aimed at protecting household finances and improving economic security for Aruba’s residents.
Additional measures include increased support for individuals receiving disability benefits and efforts to partially absorb rising fuel costs.
Eman stated that the government remains committed to ensuring prosperity is shared across the community and that economic progress translates into greater financial stability and purchasing power for working families.
Officials believe the Worker Purchasing Power Increase will provide meaningful relief to thousands of workers while contributing to stronger economic wellbeing throughout Aruba.
