ORANJESTAD, Aruba — The Aruba livestock program has added 64 purebred animals in its first major genetic renewal in 14 years.
New breeds arrive at Santa Rosa
The group includes Boer and Nubian goats, Dorper and White Dorper sheep, and Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc pigs. The initiative was organised by Primary Sector Minister Geoffrey Wever with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the Comision Pro Cunucero Arubiano.
According to government information cited by NoticiaCla, the new genetics are intended to reduce inbreeding risks that can affect fertility, productivity and animal health.
Registered farmers can access some animals
Some sheep and goats will be made available at purchase cost to livestock farmers registered with the department. The pigs will remain at Santa Rosa for its breeding program. Santa Rosa is also preparing stable renovations focused on hygiene, biosecurity and animal care.
