Prime Minister Mike Eman represented Aruba at the Groen van Prinsterer Hague Symposium held at the Waalse Kerk in The Hague. The event brought together prominent historians and Christian democratic political leaders to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Van Prinsterer’s passing.
Distinguished attendees included Gertjan Schutte, a biographer of Groen van Prinsterer, and Beatrice de Graaf, a professor at Utrecht University. Piet Hein Donner, former Vice President of the Raad van State and former Minister of the Netherlands, was also present. Political leaders Mirjam Bikker of the ChristenUnie, Henri Bontenbal of the CDA, and Chris Stoffer of the SGP participated in the discussions, which were guided by Pieter Verhoeve, the Mayor of Gouda.
Groen van Prinsterer is widely considered a founder of Christian democratic political thought in the Netherlands. As a historian, parliamentarian, and intellectual, he played an instrumental role in forming the political tradition that defends values such as freedom of education, social responsibility, and governance based on moral principles. His influence continues to be visible in Dutch politics and various Christian political parties.
During the encounter, participants reflected on themes of leadership and public responsibility. The dialogue focused on core values that remain relevant to governance and democracy today, not only within the Netherlands but also throughout the entire Kingdom.
