ORANJESTAD (AAN) – MEP leader and former Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes has urged the Aruban government to provide Parliament with full details of ongoing negotiations with the Netherlands regarding the Kingdom Act on Financial Supervision (HOFA).
Speaking during a parliamentary meeting, Wever-Croes said legislators should not have to rely on media reports to learn about discussions affecting Aruba’s constitutional and financial future. She questioned what changes are being negotiated and called for an official government update.
Referring to the recent visit of Dutch State Secretary Eric van der Burg, she noted conflicting reports about whether the agreement would be renegotiated or only amended in specific areas.
While acknowledging Aruba’s strong financial performance and consecutive budget surpluses, Wever-Croes questioned why the Netherlands should continue to have the final say on Aruba’s financial matters if the island has demonstrated responsible fiscal management.
