June 9 was celebrated globally for the first time as the International Day of Financial Intelligence Units (FIU). The date was approved during the Egmont Group Plenary in Luxembourg in 2025. This international organization brings together more than 180 FIUs worldwide to strengthen cooperation and information exchange in the fight against financial crime.
An FIU operates as a specialized entity, distinct from police or criminal investigation bodies. Its primary role is to receive, analyze, and interpret unusual financial transactions that may indicate money laundering or terrorism financing. Information is collected from various sectors, including banks, casinos, real estate agents, notaries, accountants, and money transfer companies, who are legally obligated to report suspicious activities. By connecting transactions, analyzing patterns, and identifying risks, FIU analysts can detect indications of money laundering, corruption, fraud, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and terrorism financing.
