Recent proceedings in Oranjestad have addressed various cases ranging from drug trafficking to serious financial crimes. In one case, a 22-year-old identified as E.G. appeared before a judge facing charges of selling drugs and possession of firearms, including threats with a deadly weapon. The Prosecutor’s Office has demanded a prison sentence of 30 months. It was noted that the suspect had recently returned to Aruba after receiving treatment in the Netherlands.
In a separate high-profile matter, the Prosecutor General has demanded a three-year prison sentence for Otmar Oduber, along with a six-year ban from working in the government. Defense arguments presented to the court claim that Oduber is the victim of political persecution based on false accusations and should be declared free of prosecution. Meanwhile, an Asian woman has been sentenced to six months in prison after Customs officers discovered cash hidden in her suitcase, resulting in the confiscation of over $135,000.
Other legal updates include the verdict for a Haitian man suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl, following a prosecution demand for four and a half years in prison. The Public Prosecutor also requested the maintenance of a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 35,000 Florins for Alan Howell, though the defense questioned the legality of the investigation. Additionally, the appeal for the Flamingo case involving lawyers mr. Carlo and mr. Illes is set to continue on Friday.
