ORANJESTAD – The Government of Aruba has introduced a new housing and land allocation policy aimed at creating more opportunities for residents to own homes while making the process fairer, more transparent and more efficient.
Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, Internal Services and Telecommunications, Drs. Rene Herde, said the updated policy responds to the growing demand for housing, the limited availability of government land and the need for clearer procedures. The reforms are also intended to help Aruban families facing financial challenges in securing homeownership.
Among the key changes is a more flexible approach to land use. In addition to single-family homes, government land may now be used for residential developments, apartment buildings and other compact housing solutions to make better use of Aruba’s limited space.
The government has also extended the financing period after pre-reservation approval from 30 days to 60 days, giving applicants more time to secure financing without losing their reservation.
The policy introduces revised construction requirements for smaller plots, encourages more green space on larger properties and includes new measures to prevent land speculation and commercial misuse of government land. Restrictions on certain land transfers, including transfers to non-residents, are also part of the reforms.
According to Minister Herde, the new policy represents a major step toward providing more housing opportunities for Aruban families while promoting sustainable land use and greater public confidence in the allocation process.
