ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Prosecutors have requested a 13-year prison sentence for Israel Paesch, 40, who is accused of fatally shooting his cousin, Rene Paesch, on August 23, 2025.

During court proceedings on Friday, the prosecution argued that Israel intentionally provoked Rene into coming to his residence and then shot him. Taking into account psychological and psychiatric evaluations indicating diminished responsibility, the prosecutor reduced the sentence request to 13 years.

Family members, friends, and the victim’s sister attended the hearing. The victim’s sister exercised her right to address the court and submitted a compensation claim for damages.

The charges against Israel include the killing of Rene Paesch, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of cocaine.

Israel told the court he acted in self-defense and expressed regret over the incident. He described a long-running conflict with Rene that allegedly began after a 2018 armed robbery case and financial disputes. According to Israel, the conflict escalated through multiple confrontations over the years.

Evidence presented in court included surveillance footage, witness statements, forensic findings, and recordings captured during a separate police investigation in the area. Prosecutors argued that the evidence showed Israel sought revenge rather than acting in self-defense.

A forensic pathologist testified that Rene suffered three gunshot wounds and additional head injuries. The prosecution also highlighted the discovery of more than 465 grams of cocaine at a property connected to Israel.

Psychological experts reported that Israel suffers from antisocial personality traits and that alcohol and marijuana use contributed to his behavior. They recommended treatment under supervision.

The victim’s family is seeking compensation for funeral expenses, emotional distress, and legal costs.

The court is expected to deliver its verdict on July 10, 2026.
