Detention Center  Aruba’s Airport Ready : Minister of Justice, Integration, Public Transportation, and Energy, Mr. Drs. Arthur Dowers, visited the Guarda Nos Costa facilities at FOL and Dakota. This visit is part of an ongoing effort to improve and modernize the detention facilities for undocumented individuals pending deportation.

After visiting the Immigration office at the airport, Minister Dowers proceeded to FOL, located near the Brandweer Airport, to personally assess the results of the renovation work that began after the building deteriorated due to a lack of vision and investment during the last government.

Just a few months ago, Minister Dowers made a surprise visit to the facility and saw firsthand that the renovation process was underway. Today, the detention cells are practically ready for use. Some of the Guarda Nos Costa personnel, who had been working at the Dakota detention center, have already moved to FOL and are setting up the offices to ensure the new location becomes fully operational soon.

This modernization is not only infrastructural but also institutional. It is crucial that the detention facilities comply with international human rights standards, especially when dealing with families with children who are pending deportation. Proper conditions, adequate space, ventilation, hygiene, and appropriate separation are all essential elements of a responsible and humane system.

Meanwhile, work is also progressing at the Dakota Detention Center, which will be used to house individuals with substance addiction who fall under the justice system. Under the supervision of professionals in addiction management, detainees will receive treatment and guidance, with the aim of addressing substance abuse issues that have been out of control for many years and require urgent attention.

Minister Dowers expressed satisfaction with the concrete progress at the facilities and the enthusiasm of the Guarda Nos Costa staff for the fully renovated center, which now meets the current security, humanitarian, and professional standards.

These visits confirm the Minister’s commitment to strengthening the infrastructure for control and detention in the country, with respect for human dignity, responsibility, and compliance with international standards.
