Author Michiel van Kempen will present his work Zwarte Pracht at Aruba’s National Library during a free cultural evening on Tuesday, October 20.
Presentation explores Dutch Caribbean art and history
According to 24ora, the program will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Van Kempen uses works from his private art collection in Zwarte Pracht to explore the culture and history of Suriname and the six Dutch Caribbean islands, including Aruba.
The work gives special attention to two paintings by Aruban artist Wouter van Romondt. Van Kempen previously served as a special professor of Dutch Caribbean literature at the University of Amsterdam and has published on the biography and history of Suriname and the Caribbean.
Aruban writers and music are part of the program
Mirto Laclé will highlight Aruban writers represented in Van Kempen’s Album van de Caraïbische Poëzie. Grupo Trinity, directed by Maybelline Arends-Croes, is scheduled to perform.
Frank Booi to receive recognition
The organizers also plan to recognize Frank Booi for his contributions as an author and poet to Aruban literature, history and Papiamento. Fundacion Museo Aruba helped make Van Kempen’s visit possible, working with the National Library and Aruba’s Department of Culture.
