ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Monique Giel-Labad of Wit Gele Kruis has expressed concern about the limited knowledge many young people in Aruba have regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs), stressing the need for better education and awareness.
Speaking in an interview, Giel-Labad said many young people are familiar with HIV but know very little about other sexually transmitted infections. Questions asked during individual consultations and school presentations have highlighted significant gaps in their understanding of sexual health.
She explained that while education is essential, knowledge alone is not always enough to prevent risky behavior. Alcohol and drug use can impair judgment, increasing the likelihood of unsafe sexual decisions.
According to Giel-Labad, Wit Gele Kruis regularly provides educational sessions in schools, particularly for students preparing to enter secondary education. These presentations cover teenage pregnancy, STI prevention, recognizing symptoms, and knowing when to seek medical assistance.
The organization also teaches young people how to make responsible decisions, recognize pressure or manipulation in relationships, and establish healthy personal boundaries. Special attention is given to vulnerable youth who may lack guidance or support at home.
Giel-Labad encouraged young people to seek reliable information and professional help whenever they have questions, concerns, or suspect they may have contracted a sexually transmitted infection.
