Parliamentarian Jennifer Arends-Reyes (AVP) has described the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Aruba Airport Authority, the Government of Aruba, Schiphol Group, and KLM as a strategic move for the island’s connectivity.
Arends-Reyes stated that the agreement represents progress toward a modern, efficient border system prepared for future international air traffic. She emphasized that this step allows Aruba to explore ways to strengthen its role as a connection hub between the Caribbean and Europe.
“Aruba has demonstrated during years that innovation and vision can place our country in an outstanding position in the region,” the parliamentarian declared. She noted that while Aruba has gained experience with initiatives like the biometric “Happy Flow” project, technology alone is insufficient for full EU-Schengen preclearance.
According to Arends-Reyes, establishing a European system requires international legal agreements, cooperation between border authorities, and privacy guarantees. The MOU creates the necessary framework to study digital border facilitation, with the goal of eventually implementing a model similar to Aruba’s successful U.S. Pre-clearance.
The parliamentarian concluded that the document sends a clear signal regarding Aruba’s ambition for progress and innovation. She stressed the importance of continued collaboration with partners in the Dutch Kingdom and Europe to enhance the island’s accessibility and competitiveness.
