A local mother has shared a personal account of her 18-month struggle to help her son overcome marijuana use, aiming to alert other parents about the potential dangers. She reported that her son began using the substance at age 15, having been convinced by peers that it was harmless, medicinal, and less dangerous than alcohol. Over time, however, she witnessed a drastic change in his behavior and personality that contradicted these beliefs.
The mother described finding drug paraphernalia, including grinders, pipes, and rolling papers, which compelled her to search his belongings regularly to ensure his safety. She observed physical signs such as red, small eyes and the smell of smoke, alongside a withdrawal from family life, a loss of interest in school, and a change in his circle of friends. Despite moments of desperation and an urge to give up, she sought professional help from a psychologist and fought to recover her son’s motivation and future.
In her warning to the community, the mother emphasized that recreational marijuana use can have serious consequences for a developing brain. She urged parents not to be misled by the idea that the drug is innocuous and to maintain an active interest in their children’s lives.
