ORANJESTAD, Aruba — The Aruba Respaldo Mental Health Center project has reached an important milestone after land in Kibaima was officially reserved for construction of a new facility designed to expand and modernize mental-health care on the island.
Fundacion Salud Mental Aruba Respaldo Director Caroline Hart officially received the DIP letter confirming that the Kibaima site has been reserved for the project.
Infrastructure, Energy and Telecommunications Minister René Herdé presented the documentation as part of a process carried out in cooperation with Health, Social Affairs, Elderly Care and Addiction Policy Minister Mervin Wyatt-Ras.
The Government of Aruba is making the land available so Respaldo can move forward with planning for the new facility.
Aruba Respaldo Mental Health Center Takes Major Step
The land reservation represents a concrete advancement for the Aruba Respaldo Mental Health Center after months of preparation.
Respaldo has been working with Fundacion Mama Ties on plans for a modern mental-health facility capable of responding to the island’s current and future care needs.
The organization says its existing infrastructure limits the amount of space available for expanding services.
A new purpose-built center would provide additional room while creating an environment specifically designed around modern mental-health care.
The project is expected to help Respaldo serve a broader section of Aruba’s population while continuing to develop its treatment and support services.
Kibaima Selected for New Facility
The site selected for the project is located in Kibaima.
DIP handled the process connected to identifying and reserving land for the development.
With the official letter now delivered to Respaldo, the organization has greater certainty about where the new facility can be developed as planning continues.
The land reservation does not mean construction is beginning immediately.
Additional design, planning, permitting, financing and development steps will still be required before the facility can be completed.
However, securing a location removes one of the major uncertainties facing a project of this scale.
Mama Ties Supports Project
Fundacion Mama Ties is playing an important role in helping make the new center possible.
Respaldo previously entered into cooperation with the foundation as part of preparations for the project.
The two organizations have been working together to develop a modern facility capable of meeting functional, technical and organizational requirements associated with mental-health care.
Earlier planning work also involved preparing requirements that can eventually guide the design of the building.
Respaldo thanked Mama Ties for its commitment and continued support.
Government Ministers Back Development
Wyatt-Ras said the proposed facility should be viewed as more than Respaldo’s individual ambition.
She described it as a shared goal for people who want to see Aruba continue improving its mental-health system.
Herdé’s ministry contributed through the land-allocation process, while Wyatt-Ras has been involved from the health and social-care side of government.
Respaldo also thanked both ministers for recognizing the importance of continued investment in mental-health services.
New Building Could Expand Services
The Aruba Respaldo Mental Health Center is intended to provide more appropriate space for treatment and support.
Respaldo’s objective is to create a modern environment better suited to the needs of clients and professionals.
The organization has previously said its current infrastructure is no longer ideal for growing demand or the development of more integrated mental-health services.
A new facility could also make it easier to organize different services more efficiently and strengthen cooperation among professionals.
Project Moves From Planning Toward Development
Respaldo will continue working with Fundacion Mama Ties, the Government of Aruba and other partners as the project moves through its next stages.
The Kibaima land reservation does not complete the development process, but it marks a significant transition from general planning toward a project with an identified location.
For Respaldo, the long-term objective is to provide Aruba with mental-health care in an environment that is modern, accessible and capable of responding to future demand.
The official reservation of land therefore gives the Aruba Respaldo Mental Health Center project a more concrete foundation as preparations for the new facility continue.
