ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Minister of Health, Social Affairs, Elderly Care, and Addiction Management, Drs. Melvin Wyatt-Ras, participated in the official launch of the Multidisciplinary Diabetes Care Project in Aruba.
The initiative aims to improve cooperation among healthcare professionals to provide coordinated, accessible, and personalized care for type 2 diabetes patients. Minister Wyatt-Ras emphasized that diabetes management goes beyond treatment alone and includes prevention, guidance, and continuous monitoring to achieve better patient outcomes.
The pilot project is a collaboration between Aruba’s Public Health Directorate (DVG), IMSAN, AZV, Dr. Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH), general practitioners, and other relevant health professionals. The multidisciplinary care team includes internists, diabetes nurses, dietitians, social workers, specialized pedicurists, and other experts.
The program will run for one year, during which healthcare professionals will monitor patient progress, provide guidance, and help patients better manage their condition to prevent future complications. The pilot targets adults aged 18 to 69 with an HbA1c above 53 and BMI above 25, who may qualify for participation after consultation with their general practitioner or POH (Praktijkondersteuner Huisartsenzorg).
During the ceremony, representatives from partner organizations highlighted the importance of collaboration for public health. Minister Wyatt-Ras expressed gratitude to all partners involved, including DVG, IMSAN, HOH, AZV, general practitioners, health professionals, and the Dutch Temporary Work Organization (TWO). The project marks a significant step toward a more integrated healthcare system in Aruba, where patients are central and multidisciplinary care contributes to the well-being of the community.
