ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Following last year’s symposium on elder abuse, the Directie Ouderenzaken has taken action to establish a dedicated reporting point (meldpunt) for cases involving abuse of older adults. Since January 2026, a specialized professional has been working within the department to manage and coordinate the incoming reports.
Director Desiree Helder stated that a multidisciplinary team is being formed to support the initiative, as many cases are complex and cannot be resolved by a single agency. Before the official launch, formal cooperation agreements are being finalized with relevant institutions to define responsibilities and procedures clearly.
Helder emphasized that once all protocols and agreements are in place, the meldpunt will be officially announced to the community. Despite the official launch still pending, reports are already being received and processed, mainly concerning family conflicts that sometimes result in neglect or inadequate care.
The meldpunt will officially open at the end of June or early July. In the meantime, the hotline 281-5182 is available for anyone who suspects or observes possible elder abuse. Citizens are encouraged to report such cases during office hours.
