Fuel Tax Cuts Boost Purchasing Power in Aruba

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs, and Primary Sector, led by Minister Geoffrey Wever, announced that the temporary reduction of excise taxes on gasoline and diesel continues as part of Aruba’s fiscal strategy under the AVP-FUTURO 2025–2028 governance program.

This measure, outlined in the “Landsverordening accijns op minerale oliën,” regulates excise taxes per hectoliter of imported fuel. The reductions aim to alleviate the impact of international fuel price spikes caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, directly supporting household purchasing power.

Data show that without government intervention, gasoline prices would have risen from Afl. 2.73 to 3.12 per liter between April and June 2026, and diesel from Afl. 2.85 to 2.98. With the temporary excise reduction, households benefit from partial price mitigation, paying Afl. 2.88 for gasoline and Afl. 2.57 for diesel in June.

The Ministry estimates that the excise reduction costs the government approximately Afl. 2.5 million per month. An emergency fund of Afl. 29 million was also established to offset the economic impact of rising global fuel prices. Minister Wever emphasized that these actions protect consumer purchasing power while maintaining compliance with budgetary and financial supervision regulations.

“The Landsverordening accijns op minerale oliën is a key fiscal instrument to shield our citizens from volatile international fuel prices,” Minister Wever said. “This strategy ensures Aruba’s households continue to benefit from stable fuel costs while supporting national economic resilience.”
