Aruba’s Public Prosecutor’s Office is warning residents about fraudulent traffic-fine messages being distributed through text messages, email and Facebook.
Recipients told not to click or pay
The traffic-fine scam tells recipients that they must pay a penalty for an alleged road violation. Prosecutors say the message should be ignored.
Anyone who receives it is advised not to click the included link, make a payment, provide personal or banking information, reply “YES,” or respond in any other way.
Delete the message and warn others
The Public Prosecutor’s Office recommends deleting the fraudulent message or reporting it as spam. Residents are also encouraged to warn relatives and friends so that fewer people fall victim.
Unexpected payment demands should be checked through an organization’s independently verified contact information rather than through links or numbers contained in the message itself. The Aruba traffic-fine scam warning applies regardless of whether the approach arrives by SMS, email or social media.
