The Besaril prison term has begun at the Aruba Correctional Institution, KIA, after former Minister Plenipotentiary Guilfred Besaril reported to the facility on Tuesday, October 20, according to English 24ora.
Unconditional sentence now being served
The outlet reported on October 21 that Besaril had begun serving the unconditional portion of the sentence imposed in the Tulipan corruption case. The original penalty was 20 months in prison, including 10 months suspended, with credit for time already spent in pretrial detention.
The court also ordered repayment of Afl. 138,688.73 in unlawfully obtained financial benefits, according to the account.
Conviction followed Arubahuis investigation
The case concerned the management of public money at Arubahuis, Aruba’s representative office in the Netherlands. The Court of First Instance convicted Besaril of misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office on June 13, 2025.
His appeal was ruled inadmissible because it was filed late. A subsequent challenge to that decision before the Supreme Court of the Netherlands was unsuccessful, leaving the conviction in place, English 24ora reported.
