ORANJESTAD — SKOA is continuing to strengthen digital education in Aruba while closely monitoring international developments to determine how technology should best be integrated into the classroom.
Interim SKOA Director Jessica Irausquin said digitalization continues to change the way education is delivered and that schools must adapt to developments taking place both locally and internationally.
According to Irausquin, students today face a very different learning environment compared with students 20 years ago.
In the past, pupils depended mainly on books for information. Today, young people grow up in a digital environment where information is constantly available, requiring schools to rethink how lessons are presented.
Teachers Also Need Digital Skills
Irausquin emphasized that students are not the only ones who need to adapt.
Teachers must also have the knowledge and tools necessary to connect with students and present educational material in a way that reflects the digital environment in which young people live.
As part of its digital education in Aruba strategy, SKOA has been actively working to strengthen digital expertise within its schools.
Since 2026, each SKOA school has had at least one teacher with specific experience and knowledge in digitalization.
These teachers can support both colleagues and students in using digital tools appropriately and effectively in education.
SKOA Watches International Developments
SKOA’s Education Department is also monitoring international trends.
Irausquin noted that some countries that previously introduced digital technology on a large scale in schools are now reviewing how much technology should be used and where it adds the most value.
For SKOA, these experiences provide useful lessons while planning for the future.
Looking toward 2030, the organization wants to determine which approach is most appropriate for Aruba as technology and teaching methods continue to evolve.
Technology Should Support Teaching
SKOA does not view digitalization as a goal by itself.
Instead, technology should be used as a tool to strengthen education.
The challenge is finding the right balance between technology, the essential role of teachers and the individual needs of students.
Through continued investment in digital education in Aruba, SKOA aims to provide modern and effective teaching while preparing students for the opportunities and challenges of the future.
