Aruba tourism sustainability requires protecting beaches infrastructure and visitor quality

Aruba tourism sustainability remains essential because tourism continues to serve as the island’s primary economic engine, according to ATIA President Danilo Werleman.

Speaking during an interview with DIARIO, Werleman described tourism as Aruba’s “Golden Egg” and said the industry must be carefully protected while the island works to develop additional economic pillars.

He acknowledged that Aruba needs greater economic diversification but warned that building successful new industries will require considerable time.

Werleman noted that Aruba’s tourism industry itself took more than 50 years to reach its current level of development.

For that reason, he said the island should continue strengthening its existing tourism sector while gradually creating other sources of economic activity.

“We have to focus on how we protect tourism so that we do not end up with overtourism in Aruba,” Werleman said.

He emphasized that Aruba should aim for the appropriate type and level of tourism while ensuring that infrastructure, prices and services can adequately support visitors.

Concerns About Overtourism

Werleman said ATIA is also concerned that Aruba may already be experiencing pressure from high visitor numbers.

He pointed to overcrowding and the condition of some beaches as signs that action is needed.

According to Werleman, the government should respond to these concerns before they begin to weaken the visitor experience or negatively affect residents.

ATIA has previously discussed the importance of protecting Aruba’s tourism product, he said.

Werleman stressed that visitors are attracted not only by Aruba’s beaches but also by the island’s people and hospitality.

Maintaining those strengths requires continued investment in infrastructure and public services.

Infrastructure Must Keep Pace

Werleman said tourism growth must be matched by adequate infrastructure.

Roads, beaches, public spaces and other essential services need to be maintained at a level capable of supporting both residents and visitors.

He also emphasized the importance of appropriate pricing and sufficient service capacity throughout the tourism sector.

Without these elements, continued visitor growth could create increasing pressure on the destination.

Additional Economic Pillars Still Needed

While tourism remains vital, Werleman agreed that Aruba needs to develop other economic sectors.

However, he cautioned against expecting those industries to replace or significantly reduce dependence on tourism in the short term.

Creating sustainable new economic pillars requires investment, planning, workforce development and time.

For now, Werleman said Aruba’s priority should be protecting the tourism industry it already has while preparing responsibly for future diversification.

According to the ATIA president, Aruba tourism sustainability depends on avoiding excessive tourism growth, protecting beaches, improving infrastructure and maintaining the service quality that has helped make the island an internationally successful destination.
