ORANJESTAD – Pius-X School in Dakota will begin the upcoming school year with only six classes instead of its usual twelve, highlighting the impact of Aruba’s declining student population.
Parliament President Marlon Sneek, a former teacher at the school, said the reduction reflects broader demographic changes affecting schools across the island. He noted that fewer children are enrolling in primary education, creating long-term challenges for the education system.
Sneek also discussed the need to provide schools with adequate learning materials and welcomed initiatives aimed at improving educational opportunities, including expanded secondary education pathways. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning to prepare young people for an evolving job market.
The article also notes that Aruba’s historically low birth rate has reduced demand for schools, contributing to declining enrollment across the island.
