ORANJESTAD (AAN) – MEP Member of Parliament Hendrik Tevreden has requested an urgent meeting of Aruba’s Permanent Committee on Social Affairs to discuss concerns over the country’s social assistance law.
According to Tevreden, the current legislation can reduce social assistance benefits when recipients remain outside Aruba for more than four weeks, even if their stay abroad is for medical treatment or other serious humanitarian reasons.
The MEP believes the law should provide greater flexibility in exceptional circumstances, arguing that no citizen should face financial hardship while dealing with illness or other unavoidable situations requiring care outside Aruba.
Tevreden has requested that the Minister of Social Affairs and the Department of Social Affairs participate in the meeting to examine possible amendments or exceptions to the current rules.
The MEP said the goal is to ensure Aruba’s social assistance system protects vulnerable residents while applying the law with fairness, compassion and humanity.
