Traffic Situation in Aruba Is Alarming as the Year Begins With Numerous Accidents

The traffic situation in Aruba has reached an alarming level, according to Rodney Solognier, President of the Police Officers’ Union (SPA). In an interview with DIARIO, Solognier expressed serious concern over the high number of traffic accidents recorded at the start of the year.

“This year has begun with many accidents,” Solognier said. “While more control measures are now being implemented, we as a society also need to do our part. We must increase police visibility on the roads to raise awareness among drivers and encourage more cautious behavior.”

Solognier believes that the Aruba Police Force (KPA) urgently needs a new structural approach to deploy more officers on the streets. He noted that the Police Chief has already acknowledged a shortage of personnel, making it difficult to increase patrol presence.

“To address this, we need to train and deploy more officers through the Police Training School,” he explained. “At this moment, a new class is about to begin, with a shorter training phase. These recruits will not yet have full police qualifications but will serve as support officers focused mainly on traffic control.”

According to Solognier, these auxiliary officers are often used for enforcement and traffic monitoring, helping to fill gaps where fully trained police officers are unavailable due to staffing shortages.

He added that plans are in place for the police force to expand further in 2026, with two classes expected to graduate this year and another class set to begin training soon.

Solognier emphasized that increasing police presence on the roads is essential to improving traffic safety and reducing accidents across Aruba.
