Referral Protocols Developed and Approved by General Practitioners and Medical Specialists

Minister of Public Health Mervin Wyatt-Ras has officially announced the launch of new medical referral protocols developed jointly by the Association of General Practitioners (HAVA) and the Association of Hospital Specialists of Aruba (ASHA).

According to the Minister, the referral protocols—covering referrals from general practitioners to specialists and back—are already in use. The initiative originated from collaboration between general practitioners and specialists, who worked together to develop standardized referral forms and procedures.

These protocols are designed to ensure that patients are referred more efficiently, accurately, and without unnecessary delays to the appropriate medical specialist. This improvement is expected to make the referral process clearer and smoother for patients requiring advanced or specialized care.

Minister Wyatt-Ras emphasized that the protocols also promote greater transparency. The criteria and guidelines for the seven referral protocols are publicly available on the official websites of HAVA and ASHA, allowing the community to understand how referrals are assessed and managed.

“The protocols were developed and approved by doctors themselves—the professionals who best understand how referrals between general practitioners and specialists should function,” the Minister stated. “This will result in better outcomes for patients, who deserve high-quality, efficient, accessible, and affordable medical care.”

The Ministry of Public Health views these protocols as an important step toward strengthening Aruba’s healthcare system and aligning referral practices with national healthcare objectives.
