Seeking a Balance Between Tradition, Safety, and Wellbeing in Fireworks Use

Member of Parliament Jennifer Arends-Reyes (AVP) has raised concerns about the use of fireworks, particularly during the year-end holiday season, emphasizing the need to balance tradition with public safety and community wellbeing.

Taking into account the strong public sentiment surrounding this issue, Arends-Reyes addressed a series of formal questions to the Minister of Justice, Arthur Dowers, seeking clarity on existing regulations and possible adjustments to better control the use and importation of fireworks. Special attention was given to heavy fireworks that exceed permitted noise levels in residential areas and may pose health and safety risks to people and animals.

Among the key questions raised were:

  • What is the current decibel limit allowed for fireworks imported into Aruba?

  • How is the importation of fireworks that exceed noise regulations controlled?

  • Is there a certification or inspection system in place before fireworks arrive on the island?

  • What measures are taken to protect vulnerable groups, such as young children, individuals with health conditions, and domestic animals?

  • Are there plans to limit the use of loud fireworks in residential neighborhoods?

  • Is there room for dialogue with importers to promote quieter fireworks instead of high-noise products?

MP Arends-Reyes stressed that fireworks are an important part of Aruba’s celebratory culture but should not come at the expense of public health, safety, or animal welfare.

“Fireworks are part of our traditions, but they should not compromise the wellbeing of our community. We must protect people, the environment, and animals,” she stated.

The parliamentarian expressed hope that the Ministry of Justice will take these concerns seriously and present a concrete, proactive plan ahead of future festive seasons, especially given the increasing public concern in recent years.
