Caribbean PhD Scholarships Assessment Process Now Underway

VIEWS

The Caribbean PhD Scholarships Assessment has officially entered its evaluation phase following an overwhelming response from prospective doctoral candidates across the Caribbean region, including Aruba.

During the first phase of the programme, 126 statements of intent were submitted. After an initial screening, 72 pre-proposals were selected to advance to the next stage. These proposals are currently being reviewed by an independent assessment committee.

This evaluation phase is a critical step, as it will determine which candidates are invited to submit a full research proposal and progress further in the selection process.

Strong Interest Reflects Growing Research Ambition

The high number of submissions highlights the growing academic ambition within the Caribbean and the strong demand for structured doctoral funding opportunities. Due to the competitive nature of the programme, only the most promising pre-proposals were selected, ensuring both academic excellence and fairness.

Verification Phase and Application Review

Following the September 15 deadline, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) conducted a thorough verification process to confirm the admissibility of all applications. Applicants were given multiple opportunities to correct or complete their submissions. While this extended the timeline, the process ensured equal treatment and transparency for all candidates.

Independent Committee with Caribbean Representation

The assessment is being conducted by a committee of 27 independent experts with relevant research expertise. Special emphasis was placed on including committee members from the Caribbean region, allowing proposals to be evaluated within the appropriate cultural, social, and academic context.

Information about the committee members is publicly available on the official NWO website.

Assessment Timeline and Next Steps

The committee will continue reviewing proposals until late January. Selected candidates will then be invited to submit full applications, followed by interviews scheduled for summer 2026.

From this process, seven PhD scholarships will be awarded. To streamline the process, 21 candidates will be invited to the final round, ensuring efficiency while maintaining academic rigor.

Background of the Caribbean PhD Scholarships Programme

The Caribbean PhD Scholarships initiative is part of the broader Caribbean Research Programme, developed between 2024 and 2025. Its design was shaped through close collaboration with:

  • Prospective doctoral candidates
  • The University of Aruba
  • Universities in Curaçao and St. Maarten

Feedback from these institutions helped define the funding structure, with future scholarship rounds expected to continue evolving based on shared experiences.

Strengthening Research Capacity in the Caribbean

The programme aims to build long-term research capacity by empowering local scholars to address regional challenges. Beyond financial support, the initiative fosters institutional collaboration and strengthens academic networks across the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Additional Information

Applicants can consult the official Call for Proposals for detailed information on selection criteria, procedures, and timelines.

Conclusion

The start of the Caribbean PhD Scholarships Assessment marks an important milestone for higher education in Aruba and the wider Caribbean. With transparent processes, strong regional representation, and expert evaluation, the programme sets a new standard for doctoral research development in the region.
