Minister Arthur Dowers warned that conflict, climate change and growing inequality are placing sustainable development under pressure during a high-level United Nations meeting.
Dowers speaks for the Kingdom at UN meeting
Dowers delivered the remarks on behalf of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at an event marking 40 years since the Declaration on the Right to Development, according to NoticiaCla.
The meeting took place during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Dowers said no country can address the combined pressures of conflict, climate change and inequality alone.
Human rights remain central to development
The minister said sustainable progress must be accompanied by respect for civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. He reaffirmed the commitment of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands to the 2030 Agenda and to a fair, inclusive and sustainable future.
Dowers also supported reforms intended to make the United Nations more representative and effective. His appeal emphasized renewed international cooperation and the ability of people to shape their own futures.
Kingdom plans another voluntary review
The Kingdom is expected to present its third voluntary national review of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals in 2027.
