ORANJESTAD, Aruba — More than 170 pupils from Colegio Arubano and Colegio Nigel Matthew joined an Aruba student debate on current social and political issues affecting the island and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Students examine Prinsjesdag and public budgets
The September 22 activity was organized by the Representation of the Netherlands in Aruba at Paseo Herencia, where Cas di Cultura is temporarily located. VNO head Vincent Storimans introduced the Dutch Throne Speech, budget memorandum and national budget, including their relevance to other countries in the Kingdom.
Debate exercise tests different viewpoints
Lawyer and former Colegio Arubano student Hellen van der Wal explained how Aruba’s budget is prepared and Parliament’s role in approving it. Students then defended assigned positions in group debates, including viewpoints that did not necessarily match their own. A four-member jury evaluated the discussions and praised the pupils’ active participation, according to the source report.
