Xavier University School of Medicine, located on the Caribbean island of Aruba, is marking eighteen years under the leadership of President Ravi Bhooplapur, highlighting expanding academic and professional pathways for graduates seeking to train and practice in the United States and Canada.
Since Bhooplapur assumed the presidency, the institution has prioritized building structured pathways that enable medical graduates to enter residency programs and clinical practice across North America. The university’s strategic focus on accreditation and regulatory approvals has been central to this effort, according to a press statement from the institution.
Xavier University Aruba Earns Key Accreditations
A significant milestone in the university’s development has been securing unconditional accreditation from the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine. This accreditation carries recognition from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation, which operates under the U.S. Department of Education. The university has also obtained approval from the New York State Education Department, granting students access to clinical training and licensure pathways in New York state.
These accreditations have translated into measurable outcomes for graduates. Xavier University reported an 85 percent residency match rate this year, along with first-time pass rates exceeding 85 percent on USMLE Step 1 and above 90 percent on Step 2 CK — benchmarks that are critical for securing competitive residency positions in the United States. The university previously received a visit from Aruba’s Governor, who praised the institution’s expansion plans and its growing role in the island’s educational landscape.
Canadian Pathways and New Academic Programs
In recent years, Xavier University Aruba has deepened its connections to Canada by expanding residency placement opportunities and facilitating access to provincial loan programs. These initiatives aim to make it easier for Canadian students to finance their medical education and transition into training pathways within their home provinces.
Beyond its core medical program, the university has diversified its academic offerings. A veterinary medicine program was launched in 2023 under the One Health Initiative, and a nursing program has already graduated two cohorts. Looking ahead, the university plans to introduce an online Master of Public Health program expected to launch in September 2026.
Infrastructure development in Aruba continues to progress, with ongoing investments in a new campus, upgraded laboratory facilities, student housing, and additional land to support the growing veterinary education program. University leadership, including Chancellor Dr. Bhat and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Dubey, attributed the institution’s sustained growth to long-term institutional planning and broad support from stakeholders, according to the India-West report.
