ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba’s National Committee for UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, together with the National Library of Aruba (BNA), National Archives of Aruba (ANA), Amigonan di Archivo (ADA), and the Slavery Heritage Commemoration Committee, is inviting the public to the opening of the exhibition “Letra y Consenshi: Balor Humano di un Pueblo.”

The exhibition will officially open on June 30, 2026, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the National Library of Aruba’s San Nicolas branch.

The exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on Aruba’s history of slavery and its lasting influence on the island’s society. Using original historical documents preserved by the National Library and National Archives, the exhibition highlights stories that have long remained underrepresented in the country’s collective memory.

A centerpiece of the exhibition is a historic letter from the Arubiana-Caribiana collection, along with notarial and administrative records that recently received international recognition through UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme. These documents provide valuable insight into Aruba’s 19th-century history and the lives of people affected by slavery.

Through authentic records and historical narratives, visitors will learn about the experiences of enslaved people, as well as themes of resistance, dignity, solidarity, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom and justice.

Organizers invite students, educators, researchers, community leaders, and the general public to attend the exhibition and gain a deeper understanding of Aruba’s shared history while promoting dialogue, inclusion, and respect for human dignity.
