During a press conference held on Monday morning, Minister of Transport Mr. drs. Arthur Dowers announced the official implementation of a new Taxi Rates tariff list and a dedicated mobile application.
The mobile application is scheduled to go live on Friday, May 25. The initiative addresses long-standing concerns regarding inconsistencies in billing. Minister Dowers noted that the current environment has frequently fostered speculation and user discontent, with passengers reporting varying charges for similar routes. The new framework is designed to ensure transparency and standardize costs across the island.
Detailed calculations for the fares are based on a per-kilometer model starting from a $10 base fee. To determine the total price, the distance traveled is multiplied by the specific kilometer rate, and the base amount is added. While the original legislation called for the installation of taximeters in vehicles, this requirement was never realized in Aruba.
Instead, the government relied on a fixed tariff list, which Minister Dowers acknowledged took considerable time to finalize and communicate clearly. By formalizing these rates and introducing the app, the Department of Transport aims to provide a more reliable and efficient experience for the community.
