ORANJESTAD (AAN): A fatal traffic accident in Santa Helena claimed the life of a female pedestrian early Saturday morning. The victim was identified as Liris Aurelia Senior Barrios, a 66-year-old woman from Barranquilla, Colombia.
Police and ambulance services were dispatched shortly after 6:45 a.m. to the intersection of Santa Helenastraat and Emmastraat, near the Xavier University campus in Santa Helena. When officers arrived, they found the victim lying unresponsive on the ground about 10 meters from the road.
A white Toyota Corolla with heavy damage was found a short distance away from the victim. Witnesses told police that the driver fled the scene on foot after the crash. A Toyota Harrier parked nearby also appeared to have been struck during the incident.
Based on tire marks and the initial investigation, police believe the Corolla was traveling along Santa Helenastraat from Ponton toward Belgiestraat when it veered off the road, struck the parked vehicle, and then hit the pedestrian, who was reportedly walking to work at a nearby residence. However, traffic police will continue investigating to determine the exact sequence of events.
Paramedics arrived quickly and attempted to assess the victim, but she showed no signs of life. A forensic doctor later officially confirmed her death.
