ORANJESTAD (AAN) – As Aruba celebrates San Juan Day and Dera Gai, Aruba Fire Department official Francis Toussaint is urging the public to celebrate responsibly and safely.
According to Toussaint, the Fire Department hopes to reduce the number of fire-related incidents this year compared to the 72 incidents reported during last year’s San Juan and Dera Gai festivities. He emphasized that achieving this goal depends on community cooperation.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the various cultural celebrations organized by clubs, community centers, and organizations across Aruba while helping preserve the island’s traditions in a safe manner.
Toussaint stressed that San Juan and Dera Gai are harvest celebrations and should not be used as an excuse for vandalism or uncontrolled bonfires. He noted that several large fires last year spread out of control and required multiple days of firefighting efforts, causing inconvenience to surrounding neighborhoods.
To respond quickly to emergencies, Aruba Fire Department has strengthened its operational readiness. Seven fire trucks will be deployed throughout the island, supported by four rapid-response vehicles that can assess and address urgent incidents before larger units arrive.
In addition, the emergency dispatch center has been reinforced with extra personnel to handle emergency calls efficiently.
The Fire Department is advising residents to keep areas around their homes clear of flammable materials and to carefully monitor wind conditions before lighting any fires.
For fire emergencies, the public is reminded to call 911. Aruba Fire Department stated that it remains fully prepared and equipped to provide assistance wherever needed.
