MEP Faction Delivers Two Important Letters to the Governor of Aruba

The Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP) faction has submitted two important letters to the Governor of Aruba, addressing matters of great significance for the country’s democracy and autonomy.

The first letter concerns the current government’s (AVP–Futuro) decision not to appoint a Minister Plenipotentiary (Gevolmachtigde Minister) for Aruba in the Netherlands. In the letter, the MEP faction emphasized that this role is vital for maintaining Kingdom relations and representing Aruba within the Netherlands. The faction also noted that around 700 parliamentary questions submitted by MEP remain unanswered by the government.

The letter urges the Governor, in his constitutional role, to take appropriate measures to ensure that the Aruban Parliament receives timely information and transparency, thereby restoring parliamentary oversight.

In the second letter, the MEP faction expressed its serious concerns regarding the proposed Rijkswet HOFA (Sustainable Government Finances Act). According to the faction, Minister of Kingdom Relations, Ms. Gerlien Croes, signed and agreed to the terms of this Kingdom law with the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom (Rijksministerraad) on August 13, without the approval of Aruba’s Council of Ministers and without the consent of Parliament.

The MEP faction described this as a disrespectful act toward Aruba’s highest democratic institutions and a violation of the principles of transparency and accountability. In the letter, MEP reiterated its firm opposition to the HOFA law, arguing that it restricts Aruba’s democratic autonomy and transfers key financial decision-making powers to the Kingdom level (the Netherlands), beyond the direct control of the Aruban people.

The MEP faction reminded the Governor that more than 10,000 citizens have signed a petition against HOFA, and that 13 trade unions, representing thousands of workers, have submitted their position papers opposing the law, urging the government instead to negotiate a local alternative.

In conclusion, the MEP faction expressed hope that the Governor will uphold the principles of transparency and due process, ensuring that both the government’s actions and the Parliament’s role are respected within Aruba’s democratic framework.
